Unfortunately I went absolutely nuts taking photos, and my camera battery died after only 3 fairs...well, actually 4, but I only got about 5 minutes into the Aqua fair before it died. So here are some snippets of notes I took while visiting the fairs, with as many accompanying photos as I managed to get:
ART BASEL MIAMI
I-20's booth at Art Basel was particularly nice--an installation by Gonzalo Lebrija, Moris (Israel Meza Moreno), & Eduardo Sarabia.
As was this kinetic sculpture by Geoffrey Farmer, "Ongoing Time Stabbed With A Dagger," 2009 in Catriona Jeffries' booth.
The Bischoff/Weiss booth, on the other hand, confused me. They showed an installation by Nathaniel Rackowe entitled "Black Shed (Expanded), 2009 (steel scaffolding, timber, bitumen, paint, fluorescent light). As you can see in the above photo, the scaffolding takes up nearly the entire booth space, so navigating around the structure was a bit difficult. Most viewers crept up to the edges and peered inside the openings, photographing the green fluorescent interior (as did I...see below):
However the leaflet provided by Bischoff/Weiss describes Rackowe's works as "casting light about their perimeters like a search beacon," and an accompanying diagram demonstrates light beams shooting out from the bottom corners of the structure. Unfortunately, I didn't see any such light beams. Frankly, I didn't even know I was to look for them. In this case, I think the booth itself stunted the effect of the piece.
Most amusing was Nathaniel Mellors' animatronic heads (and accompanying videos) in the Lombard-Freid booth.
What appeared to be the most time-consuming project was this incredible installation of a 3,000 square meter rolled up carpet (hand-woven?) by Michael Beutler. The fabric roll filled the booth of Galleria Franco Soffiantino in the Art Nova section.
