1st: Notify the gallery people if they don't already know.
2nd: Politely say that you are sorry. Tears usually help the gallery to know that you mean it.
Some questions to ask:
A) How much was it worth? Even if you cannot afford it, it is nice to ask and figure out what kind of damage was done.
B) Is there anything I can do to compensate the artist? Since the artist is traditionally paid half the retail amount, sometimes you may be able to simply pay the artist. In certain cases, the artist will be so grateful they will actually give you a smaller, undamaged piece.
We all make mistakes, but a gallery is no different than any other commercial venue. If you break an expensive plate in a store or rip an expensive, unique article of clothing, don't you think you will be held responsible? Galleries and artists are doing all they can to keep afloat - remember, someone will have to pay for the damage and insurance deductibles may be higher than the price of the piece that was broken.
In many cases, offers to help/pay/acknowledge your mistake are greatly appreciated by both the gallery and artist alike.
