light posting

Sorry for the light posting--I'm crazy over here preparing for X...subtle reminder: opening next Thursday, July 9th, 12noon-6pm. AND, if you stop by between 4-6pm, the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck will be parked outside!

I'm sure I'll find the time, however, to post installation photos next week when the real craziness begins.

In the meantime, here are two light reads that made my day:

Recession-Friendly

Two things that are recession-friendly:

1. performance art using appliances from DIY stores, in DIY stores. Talk about no production costs.
2. All things involving non-profit art spaces--Check out all of our favorites in this ensemble exhibition No Soul For Sale at X Initiative. It's a nice reminder that these non-profits are super important and that they still need our support. The Guggenheim costs $20. You can visit Swiss Institute and Participant in NYC and still have money for lunch.

Well, we're getting closer and closer to the summer show....standby for X. Opening July 9th, 12noon-6pm @ Mixed Greens. In fact,  our fabulous interns are on an IKEA mission right now for a few hardware items for the installation. I wish I had thought to give them a camera to take snapshots on the IKEA ferry.

And speaking of Swarm Gallery, SHOUT OUT to their new residency program at The Nest. You can check out images of Sarah Kabot's work in progress there. Very cool. I'll post more on The Nest later this week...but I hope you use this teaser-opportunity to check out their site and see what it's all about.

Field Trip!

Heather & Courtney took our interns, Sara, Laura, and Brooke, on a field trip today. As soon as they get a chance to write about their experience on the studio visits, I'll add that to the posting. But for now, here are some pictures:

High Line partying

Artinfo.com had some nice coverage of the High Line's opening soiree, including a fun slideshow of party-goer pics. Unfortunately the art website identified Terence Koh as a fashion designer (am I missing something? is he now in fashion??). Oh well. I have yet to check out the newly opened portion of the High Line. We can't wait for it to open in 2010 up to 26th street!!!

...my birthday. Yep, today is my birthday, and I thought I'd post this awesome drawing from a collaborative project One Day It's Really Gonna Be Over by Frank Olive and Rudy Shepherd. You can check out many of the drawings they faxed daily to each other on their blog.

Back to Basel, art news and other news for today:

Monica snapped a picture of this installation at the Basel section Art Unlimited. The artist is :mentalKLINIK
(artist collaboration Yasemin Baydar and Birol Demir from Turkey)

and the project seems to consist of tiny sprinklers that spew holographic glitter whilst roomba vacuum cleaners wander the area....I might be wrong on that description, but that's what I was able to decipher between the materials list and the photo.

So far, this is the ONLY Volta coverage/news/press I've seen. anywhere. what is going on, bloggers? Is anyone tweeting from there? We're dyyyying for some Volta-reading.

Paddy Johnson is not happy w/ Lindsey Pollock. Nor is she happy with the Liste location. ouch, ouch. Don't even get her started on wall labels... (although I sort of thought those labels might be helpful, no? for a crowded booth with work by multiple artists?? the thumbnails might come in handy, no??? anyone????)

And....Obama wrote this student a note, excusing her from class.

Volta news? anyone??

Monica and Steven @ City Beach Roof Top party the other night in Basel.

I'm craving more Volta news, and finding it almost impossible to locate anything online! Art Fag City--when are you visiting? Artinfo.com--are satellite fairs on your radar? Give us something. Anything. We're dying for updates, for sightings, for gossip, for sales news, for pictures. The best I've been able to find in my google searches was a flickr page with pictures of a (performance piece) pink rabbit? costume that wandered from booth to booth and had it's picture taken with curious onlookers.

In OTHER art news:

Artnet.com mentions Baselmania and kindly lists all of the New York galleries showing at Volta this year. It also makes a nice mention of the exhibition currently on view at George Adams Gallery--Parsons Pink Slips--great show.

Who knew that Parsons Pink Slips has a blogggggg?!?!?!?  SHOUT OUT.

Speaking of blogs, HDB and I discovered the best blog yesterday. If you work in Chelsea, then you are probably familiar with Grand Sichuan (SHOUT OUT) on 9th Ave. And yes, they blog. In case you were wondering what Mao's favorite dishes were...

And lastly, this was a touching story to read about an orthopedist/unexpected artist in the NYTimes.
